Book Description:

Leila Marx is trying to put her life back together after her fiancé is murdered. Her book illustrating career has limited her social contact and nightmares have trapped her in the past. When a police acquaintance enlists her help with a difficult case, Leila is surprisingly thankful to have a purpose. Not only will this help to keep her mind focused, but she will be able to use her talents as a touch clairvoyant that are frequently dismissed by skeptics. Leila and Detective Garrick Pearson delve into the mystery behind a series of missing teenage girls and mummified corpses while fighting their own growing attraction to each other.

Conner Hoffman is an intriguing lawyer and striking half-demon who enters Leila’s life unexpectedly. Although her visions are terrifying, she is fascinated by his charm and his legacy. When it becomes evident that the murders are linked to a paranormal event, Conner introduces Leila to a world unbeknownst to ordinary society. She suddenly finds herself immersed in supernatural politics, sorcery, and danger as she becomes the killer’s next target. Staying alive will mean relying on friends, accepting the unbelievable, and trusting in her heart again.

Short Excerpt
What does one wear when they commit the first felony of their life? I probably spent two hours going through my closest trying to find something criminal. It had to be black. Yes, definitely black. I finally settled on a turtleneck, spandex workout pants, and the only pair of black sneakers I’d ever owned. They were left over from my waitressing days and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were still in good shape, even if they did smell a little like grease.
I just finished pulling my hair back into a low bun, like spy girls do in the movies, when the doorbell rang. Conner was here and my heart fluttered instantly. Last night had been a lot of fun and I really enjoyed my evening with Garrick, but this was the first time any man had been to my house who wasn’t a part of the police force since Russ was killed. This was also the first time I’d ever had a half demon in the house, at least as far as I knew. After another quick glance in the mirror, I bounced over to the door.
And as soon as I opened it I realized how much of a dork I must have looked like.
There was Conner, in a regular pair of jeans and a college sweatshirt doing all that he could not to laugh at me. I glared up at him.
“What? No one told me what to wear so I had to improvise.” He started laughing but then choked it back down when I tried to close the door on him. His foot shot out and blocked my attempt.
“I’m sorry. You look good. Really.” He smiled fully at me and then bowed his head as he put his hands together in a prayer-like position. “May I have permission to enter my ninja warrior princess?”
I could see his shoulders shake with amusement again and I refused to be embarrassed. With an exaggerated sigh, I walked back into my bedroom, leaving Conner to let himself in. I decided that he should wallow in uncomfortable silence for a while, although when I came back into the living room and saw him flipping through some of my illustrations, I realized he was unfazed.
“These are really good. You’re quite talented.” I stood there, leaning against the wall for a few seconds trying to judge if he was being serious or not. Just as I started to give him the benefit of the doubt, he arched an eyebrow my way and said, “A much better artist than fashionista.”
I threw the sweatshirt I had in my hands at him and stomped over to the kitchen. His laugh consumed the room and I was surprised to find a smile on my face as I opened the refrigerator.
“Should we take snacks?” I asked. We were going to drive to a spot close to the house and wait until it was clear. I’d been told that it might take several hours and I didn’t want the cambion getting hungry while we waited.
“Sure, if you want. Maybe some water would be good.” It was obvious that he enjoyed my lack of stake-out abilities.
I grabbed one of my reusable grocery bags and filled it up with water, crackers, and Twizzlers. All of the essentials. I briefly considered grabbing a bottle of wine to control my anxiety, but decided against it in the end.
“So, are we ready to go?” I asked as I hoisted the bag on my shoulder and grabbed the sweatshirt back. He studied me for a moment and then pulled an object from his back pocket.
“Not until you put this on,” he said as he tossed something small and black at me. It was a ski mask, one of those ones that covered everything except for your eyes. I pulled it over my head and batted my lashes.
“Am I ready now?”
He laughed and took the snack bag off my shoulder. “Yes, Leila. I think you’re ready for a life of crime.”

Alternative POV - Conner and Leila’s First Date

Human souls still had their appeal and the restaurant vibrated with them tonight. Taking in an extra long breath, I relished in the energy. I may not need to collect them anymore, but I did enjoy identifying which ones I might have marked.
The bartender, for example, would have earned me an extra slap on the back. Beneath his smile and flirtatious act, he hid a dark secret. He enjoyed the hunt as much as me, but what he did to the ladies once he got them home, was unacceptable. Yes, my father would have been happy to acquire him.
A small hand grabbed my shoulder for support. Sara climbed on the bar stool again, body in constant motion. Her excitement made me appreciate what my new life could be. Now that the contract with my demon father was complete, I could fully enjoy living with the humans for the next millennia.
There she is!” Sara said, jumping down from her seat and rushing over to the door. Her husband, Ben, smiled and shook his head.
Is she always like this?” I asked.
He laughed before finishing his drink. “It’s why I love her.” Ben patted my shoulder. “Don’t worry, Conner, she’s great.”
I raised my eyebrows.
Leila,” he clarified. “You’ll like her.”
I nodded. Did he sense my nervousness? I moved here just a few weeks ago, hoping to start fresh. The last thing I wanted to do was go on a blind date, but Ben had been persistent.
Looks like she’s talking about you,” Ben said, nudging me in the side.
I turned around, shocked at what I saw. My skin tingled and a red tint flooded my vision, setting the cambion senses on alert. Of all the women in Baltimore, I’d been set up with a supernatural.
Ben laughed again, communicating silently with Leila while admiring his wife. Forcing my eyes back to their human color, I took a moment to assess my date. Blonde hair, long legs, great smile, and a clairvoyant. I would have to be careful.
Sara dragged her friend over to us, nearly tripping on her high heels. Knowing this might be trouble, I still couldn’t tear my eyes away from Leila. Her soul hummed with power. I focused on protecting my secret and tried to act human.
Conner,” Sara said, “This is Leila. Leila Marx. And Leila, this is Conner Hoffman.”
I glanced at her one more time, concentrating so my eyes would not react to her beauty. Her cheeks flushed and she looked down at the floor. Amused at her reaction to me, I smiled.
Leila, it is very nice to meet you. I’ve heard so much, but to see you in person is truly a delight.”
Gently lifting her hand to my mouth, I kissed it. The touch sent shivers through my body, warning me to be careful but reminding me what it could be like. I wanted to live as a human again, and Leila Marx might be the key to making that happen.
I didn’t tell him anything,” Ben joked. “I’m going to grab our table.”
Leila looked straight into my eyes, searching for something, before I let go of her hand. I’ve met clairvoyants before, and I guessed Leila’s gift relied on touch. Her forehead creased ever so slightly in confusion. She had tried to read me.
I smiled, knowing I could only hide my secret so long with this beautiful woman.

My Thoughts and Review:
It has been awhile since I have read not only a good mystery but one with a great paranormal twist too it as well. Not only did this have a paranormal element but it had all the creatures I love as well.

I fell in love with Garr's writing after reading her YA series, Syrenka, so I was pretty excited to see her writing in this new genre. I just knew it was going to be great and I am so glad that it lived up to all of my expectations.

Leila was a great character. She was strong and fierce when she needed to be and she took things in stride. Even though she was grieving she still remembered to live.

There were some fabulous secondary characters that made me laugh and smile numerous times with their actions or banter. Mac was a character and I loved his character. King stole my heart. Sarah was everything a bestie should be. Evie was great, Terez, Connor, Garrick, all of them were just great.

And the best part about this book was that even though it is part of a new series, this one didn't end with a million questions. This part of the mystery was done with but still left it open for a lot more to happen in the future.

Once again I think Garr created a new unique fun series that I for one will be picking up and reading as soon as they are released.

I give this one a very solid 4 Stars!.

How a Team is Born!

Readers usually ask where the inspiration came from for an author. Not to sound hokey, but mine came from finding a best friend at a time when I really needed one.

I was thirteen - you all know it - it’s the age where the world looks like a total mess. The one thing I loved was books. My mom was a research librarian and she passed along the love of old legends to me, but when my grandfather passed away I actually began to wonder about angels, especially why, if they were real, they would come to this messed-up place?

My dreams at night turned away from the Acropolis and the ancient mysteries and fell into a grand library. I loved that place; it had every book known to mankind. There were groups of eager looking students walking around, a few adults who seemed to be ‘watching’ carefully, and a young boy named Matt.

Matt was my age and was hysterical. He would sit and talk to me in that library and I always thought we’d get kicked out for being too loud. But every night he showed me around the place and spoke a great deal about his training and what he was waiting for - the chance to come ‘down’ and have a life. He was all excited about it, and when I would roll my eyes and tell him how awful it was, he’d just smile and say that he wanted a chance at a life - a chance to fight, defend…maybe even fall in love. That’s how Matt became a reality for me - a spark of imagination that helped lead me through the troubled time of losing my grandfather.

Years later when I lost my dad, Matt returned, and I suddenly wanted the world to meet him and his partner. I wanted readers to know about what I saw and how different everything was from what is ‘in print’ - how there was fun, laughter, lighthearted sarcasm at times - and the real difference between their lot in life and ours.

I’ve worked on The Angel Chronicles for a while now, and with Gilded Wings, Matt truly comes to life. When I saw the cover, I was beyond choked-up because that was my friend out there for the world to see…and he really deserves that!

Emily and Matt will never be in the ‘fallen’ category. They are a team that comes from a place where things make sense and enter into a world where they could be torn apart by emotions - good and evil - that they find surrounding them. But the one thing they will always have is another chance. And, to me, that has to be one of the greatest gifts anyone could possibly ever receive.

So…thank you for giving them a spot on your site and in your lives!

Until Next Time, Everybody.

Read-a-long Excerpt:
He turned back to Anya. “It says in this file you worked as a governess and domestic servant in your homeland. How many languages can you speak?”

“I speak several.”

“Is French one of them?”

“Yes,” Anya replied, confusion raged in her eyes. “Why?”

Reaching out, Drew took her by the elbow. “You and, go wait in the cafeteria for me. I have to stay here until everyone is checked in and then I will come get you.”

The medic rolled his eyes. “Drew, come on.”

“I know someone who needs a governess for his son. I’m sure you will do; if you want the job, of course.” Drew said, elbowing Mike in the stomach.

“I thought we were going to the Old West?” Gregori sniffled into the back of his hand, as he wiped the tears from his dirty cheek.

Anya smiled down at him. “We will. But first we have to get some money together to travel. Think of it as our first adventure. This might be the only time a cowboy like you will be able to see the big city of New York. It should be fun.”

The boy nodded and turned away, closing his eyes to the darkened hallway that’d just consumed his father. “Okay.”

Drew turned to the tallyman sitting silently in the corner. Bill looked stunned, staring at the young woman who’d shown more determination than half the men walking by. He looked at Drew’s angry face and pushed his thumb down quickly on the metal contraption.

The two clicks rang out like church bells in the Great Hall, as Gregori and Anya became Americans.

Saving Time

Two years ago Garison Fitch traveled through time and rewrote history. An accident in the eighteenth century created a whole new world, and even gave Garison a wife he had never met before. Now, he’s got a daughter and he’s coming to enjoy this world he created. Until he’s attacked by men masquerading as Indians, and a funeral procession from out of the past enlists his help, and a tree grows from sappling to full-grown in a matter of minutes, threatening his daughter’s very life. Time itself is unraveling and Garison’s trips through time seem to be the cause. Garison must go back in time once again and keep himself from making the original trip that started the problem. But he can’t use his time machine to go back. How does one sew up a rip in time?

Lost Time

Jason Kerrigan and Brownwyn Dalmouth are pilots with the Republic of Texas Army Air Corps. A world war is going on and bombs have just brought an end to Crockett Air Field in south Texas. Jason and Bronwyn, though, are called away from the battle to be test pilots for a new aircraft that-they're told-will bring the war to an end. The experimental craft lives up to expectations in early tests, but then it lands them somewhere it never should have sent them. Another place? Another time? Another dimension? Somehow, they've taken a trip to the future and changed the past. Or did they? The answer to their change of reality may be known to a Justice of the Peace in Colorado named Garison Fitch. To figure it out, though, Garison may have to team up with his least favorite person: Bat Garrett.

Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy
My Rating: 5 Very Solid Stars!!

Goodreads Description:
Betrayal burns. Death hurts and the clock ticks…

Minutes and hours stretch into days. How long can Sam survive being confined in Hell? I have a plan… a plan with a lot of holes. I need someone who can make up for my weaknesses, someone who possesses the power that I lack. Riley is supposed to be off limits. He’s dangerous, he’s mean and he’s not to be trusted. But I do.

Beelzebub is on a tirade, bent on revenge. I took what he wants and sent him into the flames. I will wear the scars of his punishments forever. But scars don’t scare me anymore.

On my way to free Sam I find my true path, a secret place and new allies. But in Hell nothing is easy… and everything is cruel. The only thing left to do is survive.

My Review:
I adore Cambria, she is so amazing, as a person and as a writer and although I do adore her, my review of this series isn’t biased at all, because that just wouldn’t be cool.
So I feel no guilt whatsoever in saying that I LOVE this series. I really, really do. It is just kick butt and made of awesomesauce.

And speaking of kick butt, let’s talk about Heven. I loved watching her get all fierce and protective in this installment. To really take charge and do what needed to be done. She is becoming so much stronger as this series progresses and I love seeing her character grow in each new book in every way a person can grow.

A lot of things happen to her and her family and friends and she keeps soldering on. New abilities, new secrets, disappointments, frustration and loss and yet, she is stronger than ever.

Sam. What can I say about Sam other than just when I think I can't love him anymore than I already do, he comes back and blows me away with his love for Heven. He is just amazing and truly one of my favorite make characters. If I had a book boyfriend, I would want it to be Sam.

This book was so intense, much more than the others have been. There is so much going on with Sam, Heven, Kimber, Cole. Gemma, Logan and now Riley (who I have to say I really like, even despite the, uh,, slightly crazy ending, I know, I know, but, there you have it.).
And even though this book is intense, it still has its lighter moments. Moments when I had a smile on my face from the tender moments with Heven and Sam and even the funnier moments when I actually laughed out loud.

Once again I love that Cambria continued with the alternating POVs between Heven and Sam. I just love that about these books. That we get to look inside both their heads and know what they are thinking and feeling. It just adds so much to this series.

While there are lighter moments, there are also some pretty hard ones too. Not everyone makes it in this one. We lose some people and it about broke my heart but we get to make some new friends and allies as well. And while that doesn't make up for the ones that didn't make it, it does make me excited to see where this series will go next.

Once again Cambria has blown me away with her ability to draw me into the story and feel like I am a part of it. To completely captivate me with the world and characters she has created. She words memorize me and make me want more. I am always sad when I have come to the end of one of her stories. She is an amazing storyteller.

Each time I don't think the story or characters can be better she surprises me again. I adore this series. I know eventually it will have to come to an end and I really do not look forward to that day. I don't want to have this series end. It will be like losing a friend, lots of friends in this case.

Cambria has once again created a masterpiece and I am so thankful I have been a part of it. I can't wait to read more!

Review: Dark Seraphine by KaSonndra Leigh

Title: Dark Seraphine
Author: KaSonndra Leigh
Series: Book One in the SeraphineTrilogy
Published By: Self Pub (Oct. 21, 2012)
Source: Copy Provided by the Author (in exchange for an honest review)
Genre: YA Paranormal
My Rating: 4 Stars!

Goodreads Description:
"Mom always says the angels walk among us. She forgot to tell me that sometimes they're not all fluffy and nice."

Seventeen-year-old Caleb Wood has seen people he calls the walkers since he was a baby. It didn't take long for him to realize something…no one can see these strangers but him. They never stuck around or tried to touch him. And they never said a word. That was until one day on the first day of class in his senior year when an incredibly gorgeous girl strolls into his life…and things are never the same again.

Soon Caleb realizes he has stepped into the middle of a growing conflict between two ancient groups. And his ability to see the invisible ones, the half-breeds that want to modify the human race, just might be the only hope both he and the mysterious, but infuriating, Gia, have of making it out alive.

My Review:
I love stories with the male POV so I was ecstatic to see that this one was told through the voice of Caleb, our male protagonist.

I really liked Caleb’s voice. At first I wasn't sure I would because you know, he is pretty realistic. Pretty male and pretty typical, slightly immature, and leaning slightly toward the typical horndog seventeen year old boy. But, he really grew on me and I came to like his inner dialogue. His self deprecation and humor.

It is going to be hard describing this read without giving anything away, but I am going to do my best.

Simply put, this was a fun read very unlike anything out there right now in the world of YA paranormal.
In fact, if you like YA and you like paranormal and are like me and love the male POV, then I would say this needs to be in your must read list for 2012.

We don't get a lot of background about the Walkers (ghost like people (or angles as his mom calls them) that only Caleb seems to be able to see and hear) going into the story and even though that would normally bother me, we do get bits and pieces as the story progresses and that held me over until I knew we would get more. Until everything would really start to unfold and make more sense (not that anything was confusing, because honestly, it wasn't).

Gia is a Walker and the day she comes into Caleb's life is the day it all really starts to change. This time Gia isn’t' someone that no one else can see, she becomes a real living and breathing girl and she starts to follow Caleb around (his stalker Walker as he likes to call her) and oh yeah, she is gorgeous and mysterious and confusing the heck out of Caleb.

I admit, her hot and cold act did get a little frustrating for me as well but only because I wanted all the answers now. I didn't want to have to wait for them all to be revealed.

This book had a lot of twists that I didn't see coming. It kept me on my toes guessing what the Walkers really were, what Gia really was.

I loved this whole story and I can't wait to read the next one. Ms. Leigh has once again written an amazing story that will keep you turning the pages and wondering when you can get your hands on the next book in the series.
