Review: Thicker Than Water by Brigid Kemmerer

Title: Thicker Than Water
Author: Brigid Kemmerer
Series: Stand Alone/Possible Series
Published By: Kensington Books (December 29, 2015)
Source: ARC Copy Provided by the Publisher (in exchange for an honest review)
Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy
My Rating: 3 Stars

Book Description:
On his own

Thomas Bellweather hasn’t been in town long. Just long enough for his newlywed mother to be murdered, and for his new stepdad’s cop colleagues to decide Thomas is the primary suspect.

Not that there’s any evidence. But before Thomas got to Garretts Mill there had just been one other murder in twenty years.

The only person who believes him is Charlotte Rooker, little sister to three cops and, with her soft hands and sweet curves, straight-up dangerous to Thomas. Her best friend was the other murder vic. And she’d like a couple answers.

Answers that could get them both killed, and reveal a truth Thomas would die to keep hidden…

I adored the Merrick boys so when I knew we were getting a whole new book, once again from the male perspective AND by Kemmerer, I was all in.

No worries about not liking Thomas or the setting, or any other characters, I had complete trust that Kemmerer would deliver one heck of a story and mystery that would keep me turning the pages and on the edge of my seat and she came through like a champ.

In fact, I really did love this and the surprises along the way were all Kemmerer, what I have come to love and expect for her.

If there is one thing Kemmerer knows how to do, it is write a guy that is easy to feel for, fall for, and love and she doesn't deviate from that equation at all in this story.

There was so much going on in this story, some foreshadowed, some speculation, and most, yet to come.

I have no idea if this book will be part of a series but with the ending like it was, with so many things that were left out there in the open, I truly am hoping that it will be because I want more. Thomas needs more of his story told. More of his background and that of his family's and I hope like heck we get it.

  4. I tried to search to see if it was a series or standalone and couldn't find an answer one way or the other. I wonder if it's her publisher just hasn't optioned the second book until they see how the sales are on the first book?

  6. I just finished this one today, Ali and I really really liked it, but like you said, too many loose ends, so I'm sincerely hoping it's part of a series. I loved the male POV though. It was so well-done.
    Lovely review!

  7. Great review Ali and from the blurb one that's right up my alley. But gahh on ending that leaves more questions unanswered than answered!
    Thanks

    1. I know darn it but that won't be a bad thing if book two hurries up and gets here. ;)

  8. Hmmm. I love the sound of everything about this one except the open ending Ali. I'll be fine with it if there are more books, but if there aren't I'll probably struggle with that part. I'm an answers girl. I need to know what's going to happen to the characters once I close the back cover! Glad you enjoyed this one overall:)

    1. I do too and there was just so much that I felt like I still needed to know darn it! I'm sure (hoping like crazy at least) that there will be a book two.

  9. Hmmm ... three stars worries me a bit. I ADORED Kemmerer's Elementals series, so I've been really anticipating this one. If you knew for sure that it was part of a series would you have liked it better?

    1. I think so because I wouldn't have been as frustrated with the ending as I was.

  10. The mystery aspect definitely has me interested. I haven't read any of her books yet but I've heard she creates really excellent characters.

    1. The ending! Too abrupt and not enough after what happened after the mystery. It is hard to describe without giving away anything but something big happened and was revealed and then...nothing really much was said about it afterward.

  14. I have a feeling it'll be a series what with all those hanging issues in the end. Plus y'all love this... kaching!

  15. I'm a sucker for the male's pov, and this sounds like there's plenty of twists. Hopefully there's more to come with those questions still lingering, Ali :)

Who doesn't like a mystery? And how enticing is that book cover! Great review! I love how you trust the author to deliver.

  19. Brigid Kemmerer is a new to me author. I’m not sure this book is for me. I don’t like the sound of the ending. Probably I’ll check out her other works. Lovely review, Ali!

  21. It must be hard to write the opposite sex. Some authors just can't seem to pull it off. I'm not usually a fan of falsely accused but this one sounds good. I'm a fan of a well done mystery. The description doesn't give away how this is a fantasy. I'm wondering if it's light on fantasy or not. Sometimes it's almost like they cheat and throw fantasy at it if you know what I mean.

    1. She pulls it off well and slight paranormal I think actually describes it best.

    1. I think more than anything it was that ending that did it and the lack of explanations.

  25. 3 stars and an open ending with no sequel as yet-no, not for me I don't think. Too bad.

  26. I loved the Merrick brothers and I'm a bit bummed that this one didn't wow you as much, Ali. I do hope the loose ends are tied up soon. Last I heard the book was a standalone.

    1. Yeah that is all that I have heard as well which makes me sad. I think if it was the first book and I knew for sure there would be more that I would have rated it higher.
