Mini Review: One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus

Title: One of Us is Lying
Author: Karen McManus
Series: Stand Alone

Genre: YA Mystery
My Rating: 4 Stars!

Book Description:
One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.

Pay close attention and you might solve this.

On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.

Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.

Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.

Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.

Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.

And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon's dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?

Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.

You know those books that are so good that despite the fact that you are pretty sure you have it all figured out in the first few chapters, that you just don't care because you have to see if you are right, but most of all, you just want to keep reading because the story has sucked you in?

That was this read for me. Sure, I knew pretty much everyone's secrets and I had a good guess what happened to Simon but I didn't care because I had to make sure I was right and that is where the fun came in. Really the story was so engaging that it was pretty hard to put down and knowing the who and the what, didn't ruin a thing for me or take away from the story one bit and for that, I would highly recommend reading this. It was just that good.

  10. Looks like a fun read. Just because it's predictable doesn't mean the ride isn't worth it. All about the writing and glad to see this is a good one.

  11. Sounds like an interesting read. I probably won't like it that it's all easy to predict, but you never know. I'll check it out at the library. :)

  13. Sounds good Kindlemom, sort of like a retelling of the 80s classic film The Breakfast Club.

  14. I loved this one, too! I was caught up into from page one. Glad you enjoyed despite figuring out so much ahead of time. I didn't know who the killer was until pretty late. :)

    1. I think I either read too many reviews on it beforehand or maybe I've just read too many mysteries LOL, either way, it really didn't matter because it was so well written. ;) So happy you loved this one too.

  17. This book sounds so good and it's been on my radar for a while. Stories like this are hit or miss with me though because of their predictability. So, I am happy to hear that even though you were able to guess everything going on, you still really enjoyed it. That says a lot about the author's writing.

    1. It is a tiny bit like that other than most of the book doesn't happen during detention but there is a similarity there for sure.
