Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Title: Uglies
Author: Scott Westerfeld
Published By: Simon Pulse (Feb. 8, 2005)
Genre: Dystopian/Fantasy
My Rating:  4 Stars

Goodreads Description:
Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.
But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world -- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

My Review:
I have heard so many good things about this series that I just knew I had to try it, especially now that there will be a movie made.
I have to say, I wasn't disappointed. This is a great series.
I love the message that is betrayed throughout, sometimes in small subtle ways and sometimes not.
Tally is a kick butt heroine that does what needs to be done and is loyal to those she loves. Not only does she learn some valuable lessons along the way about learning to see inside others where true beauty lies but she also learns that there is more to life than being "pretty".
I can't wait to see what else happens along the way to Tally and David and while I usually don't care for cliffhangers, this one didn't end too badly, maybe because I know I can just pick up the next installment and don't have to wait for it to come out to see what happens next.
