Book Description:
An undead serial killer comes for DJ in this thrilling third installment of Suzanne Johnson’s Sentinels of New Orleans series

The mer feud has been settled, but life in South Louisiana still has more twists and turns than the muddy Mississippi.

New Orleanians are under attack from a copycat killer mimicking the crimes of a 1918 serial murderer known as the Axeman of New Orleans. Thanks to a tip from the undead pirate Jean Lafitte, DJ Jaco knows the attacks aren’t random—an unknown necromancer has resurrected the original Axeman of New Orleans, and his ultimate target is a certain blonde wizard. Namely, DJ.

Combatting an undead serial killer as troubles pile up around her isn’t easy. Jake Warin’s loup-garou nature is spiraling downward, enigmatic neighbor Quince Randolph is acting weirder than ever, the Elders are insisting on lessons in elven magic from the world’s most annoying wizard, and former partner Alex Warin just turned up on DJ’s to-do list. Not to mention big maneuvers are afoot in the halls of preternatural power.

Suddenly, moving to the Beyond as Jean Lafitte’s pirate wench could be DJ’s best option.

My Thoughts and Review:
I fell in love with this series after reading the second book River Road and I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. After the ending I just needed more. I wasn't ready for it to be over and I just knew I would completely devour this as soon as I opened it. Suzanne is an amazing writer, she truly is one of my favorites, whether it is this series or her other series, she is just fantastic and I look forward each time I open up one of her books to get pulled into one of her worlds and am ready to get a story that I know will blow my mind and get the characters I have come to care about and  love. In other words, I know I will get my fix. I will get action, romance, the paranormal kick I love, some mystery and really, a whole lot more. I get everything I love to read about in one fantastic read.

As always the setting of this one is in New Orleans and Suzanne once again takes so far into the city that we feel like we have been transported right into the heart of the city. You can smell the water and taste the salt on your tongue.  Hear the rich dialect of the speech and feel the energy of the city as it buzzes with constant chatter, excitement and movement. And most of all you can feel the strength of the town and people as they rebuild their lives and move on from the devastation and heartache that tried to overtake them. A place so magical you can feel it in the very air you breathe.

I absolutely loved the direction this took. Not only did the romance heat up, in more ways than one but I got a ton of questions answered and more importantly we got some Jean time. Ahem. I mean...yeah. Most importantly DJ continues to grow and kick serious prete butt. Her powers start to develop more as she learns about her heritage and did I mention the Jean time? Although if I am being brutally honest here, we didn't get nearly enough time with the sexy pirate. I can't help it, the little pirateer has stolen my heart and once again he proved himself an ally to DJ and I can't help but not like him for that.

I did love the Alex time, oh yeah and I even liked Rand believe it or not and thankfully, all of my questions about him were answered as well. So much happens in fact that I don't even know where to begin. Jake is...well, Jake is still struggling but he is getting better in his own way and my heart did go out to him and I really hope we get more Jake time in the next book as well because I really do love him, faults, anger, loup, and all.

Suzanne has blown me away with this series and I can for sure now say that this one is right up there in my top ten favorite urban fantasy series. I love everything about this one and I can't wait to get more. I hope Suzanne can write quickly!

  1. I've heard great things about this series and I love New Orleans as the setting of books. Great that many of your questions were answered and the romance really heated up! That is what I'm always hoping for in the end of a series. I don't think I have read anything with a sexy pirate yet!
