Review: Burn Mark by Laura Powell

Title: Burn Mark
Author: Laura Powell
Published By: Bloomsbury (June 2012)
Source: ARC copy from Netgalley
Genre: YA Paranormal
My Rating: 3 Stars

Goodreads Description:
Cleo is from a family of witches. She is desperate to develop the ‘Fae’ and become a witch herself.

Lucas is the son of the Chief Prosecutor for the Inquisition and his privileged life is very different to the world of witches that he lives alongside.

And then on the same day, Cleo and Lucas both develop the Fae. In one fell stroke, Cleo and Lucas’s lives are inextricably bound together, whether they like it or not . .

My Review:

For some reason it took me a long time (well long time for me anyways) to get through this book. I think I spend around 4 days reading it off and on.

It felt like I was never going to get through with it, which kind of makes me sad because really the story line for this book is fantastic. Witches set in modern day London, an Inquisition that helps control them, mystery, suspicion, treachery, denial.
Truly it has a lot of really great elements to it but for whatever reason I just could not connect with this story or with the characters and as a lot of you know, that makes it hard to really enjoy a story. It just wasn't a page turner for me. I never found myself dying to know what happened next or even caring about what would happen to the characters.

I kept waiting for the story to pick up just a little bit more (and it did by the ending), for something drastic to happen. I guess I was looking for a little more action in the storyline. Something dramatic and mind blowing.

I guess sometimes, no matter how nicely written a story is, it just isn't ever going to be a favorite and sadly I felt this way about this one.

But, please don't let that stop you from picking it up and trying it because if you like reading about witches and want something new and different and fresh. I think you would probably enjoy this story. Like I said, it was well written, just not for me.

  1. I hate when I have a hard time getting through a book. Thankfully that hasn't happened to me for a while now!

  2. That's how I felt about THe Girl With a Dragon Tattoo. I still haven't finished it, and I started it months ago. Everyone keeps telling me to keep going, I will love it! I really need to if I plan on ever watching the movie!
