Guest Post:
Things I would do if I were a Time Lord.

AKA: How I would use Time Lord technology to improve my publishing business.

So recently, I’ve allowed myself to become obsessed with Doctor Who. Notice my wording. Allowed. Yes, I’ve resisted for a long time, with good reason---with such a large universe and so many episodes to watch, and with me working at home...well, it’s too huge a distraction. So why now? Well, I’m working on a science fiction novella series, so I consider it “research” to get me in a sci-fi frame of mind. Yes...research...

Anyway, because I have so many ideas and projects I want to work on in this short life, I have decided the best solution for me is to become a Time Lord. I could live for a long time, travel the universe, and travel through time itself.

Here is my to-do list for when I become a Time Lord.

1. I’ll probably be too excited to do anything productive for the first couple of years. I’ll spend this time travelling the universe with my companion(s), and journaling these experiences. This will be crucial research for future books. I could also re-work it as an autobiography, or submit weekly updates to a prestigious newspaper/website.

2. Once I have had my fill of travelling, I’ll re-establish my publishing house, using funds from selling copies of my experiences travelling the universe. I would do this in the present day. OR the future, if the future is more amazing than the present.

3. If for some reason, my publishing venture goes downhill and/or I’m strapped for cash, I will invite one or two rich investors to go on a time-travelling adventure with me. Probably not to the past, as that would be extremely risky, but to the future or to another planet. The cash I’d raise would help me fund books. Or, if I’m already doing well, I’d sell a limited quantity of rides to rich people to raise money for charity.

4. I would also take a couple of terminally ill children on time travel adventures with me, because why not?

5. I would also use Time Lord technology to store inventory. No obscene warehouse fees for Clare! Time Lords can store a multitude of things in a small space--hence the TARDIS being bigger on the inside than it looks.

6. My insurance costs will probably be through the roof because Time Lords seem to attract all kinds of nasty troublemakers, like Daleks and Cybermen (*shudder*) and large wasps from space. My hope here is that the Doctor could take care of MOST of these issues, leaving me in peace to write and publish and sell my books. I would not say no to an adventure with him, however...

7. I would keep my publishing business at a reasonable size, as I wouldn’t want to dominate future markets and disrupt any timelines.

8. Because I can travel pretty much anywhere in the universe, this allows me a unique opportunity to introduce the human race to alien writers and books. This could help the human race get over the initial shock of first contact and provide a foundation for peace.

Any other Doctor Who fans out there? What would you do if you were a Time Lord? How would it affect your book-loving life?

  7. Doctor Who is a cult classic. The modern Doctor Who is a revival of the 1960s show. The Doctor is a man who travels through time and space in an old British phone box that is actually his spaceship, called the TARDIS. He is the last of his kind, the Time Lords, and the Time Lords are famed not only for their time-travelling technology but also for their incredibly long lifespan. They simply regenerate if they die or get too old. Hence, the different actors that can play him! ^_^

  8. LOVE Doctor Who. Haha, I'd totally go and get books that I can't wait to be released. The next book in a series won't be out for 1 or 2 years? Pfft.. I'll have it in seconds.
