Title: Clockwork Angel
Author: Cassandra Clare
Series: Book One in the Internal Devices Trilogy
Published By: Simon & Schuster (August 31, 2010)
Source: Purchased
Genre: YA Fantasy
My Rating: 3.5 Stars

Book Description:
In a time when Shadowhunters are barely winning the fight against the forces of darkness, one battle will change the course of history forever. Welcome to the Infernal Devices trilogy, a stunning and dangerous prequel to the New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments series.

The year is 1878. Tessa Gray descends into London’s dark supernatural underworld in search of her missing brother. She soon discovers that her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters—including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she is attracted to. Soon they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. Equipped with a magical army of unstoppable clockwork creatures, the Club is out to rule the British Empire, and only Tessa and her allies can stop them....

I am going to be honest, I put off reading this series because, while I loved the first three books in Mortal Instruments, I was slightly upset that the author had decided to make the trilogy a series of six instead. I know what you are thinking, why in the world would that upset me?

The simple answer? Because I was happy with the way it had ended after book three and I didn't feel more books were necessary and honestly, that they were nothing more than a ploy to make more money.

Not very nice at all, I know, but it was how I felt at the time and so, I decided against reading the Internal Devices anytime soon and put it off and kept putting it off until I finally decided I couldn't put it off anymore.

What an idiot I can be sometimes.

I was quickly reminded why I fell in love with Clare's writing from the very first page and kicking myself that I had been such a fool.

And even though it took me a really long time to warm up to Will, I fell in love with Tessa and Jem from the get go.

It was fun to see familiar faces (oh Magnus how I love thee) and meet some familiar surnames from characters from the original series.

I definitely won't be putting off reading book two and three.

  1. I was one of those readers who was more than happy that she decided to write three more books of TMI. I just couldn't get enough. Anyway, this TID was a bit slow for me. I do adore Will!

I hope you'll enjoy the rest.

  2. It can be hit or miss when an author tries to push a series passed its shelf-life, especially when it concluded so beautifully to begin with. It seems like the extra installment kinda worked for Cassandra Clare... hopefully the next one will be a bit better.

    1. I am glad it worked and I do know I need to read the second half of them now, I am sure I will someday.

  3. It's great it worked out, but I personally feel that you can definitely push a series beyond its usefulness. Although I read a series a couple of years ago for tweens that was only three books, and I wanted more! I think it's better to be on that side of it than to be on book #6 and nobody cares, though!

    1. I have to agree with you Stephanie. ;) Although I have heard that it did work so I am sure at some point in time I will get to them.

  4. I was really happy with the way things ended in book 3 of The Mortal Instruments as well Ali, and like you, wasn't all that excited that more books that would inevitably put Jace and Clary through the wringer once again would be coming out. I didn't end up reading those, but I did pick up this one and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to your thoughts on the rest of the series!

    1. Thanks so much Jenny and I am glad that I wasn't the only one that had issues with it.

  5. I liked the first three Mortal Instruments books much better than the second three. Though there were aspects of the last three I like better, like Simon and Magnus' parts.

I liked the Infernal Devices better than Mortal Instruments in some ways, because I liked Tessa better. (Even with the stupid love triangle)

I loved Magnus in this book! It was also cool to hear about the ancestors of various later characters.

  6. I was like you too, Ali. I was annoyed when the author decided to extend the series because things did end well. Anyways, I have this series but I still haven't read it. I really want to, but there are just so many books out there. I've also heard the LT in this series is pretty intense and I've heard some things about the ending which doesn't please me. So for now, I've decided not to read it. I'm glad you enjoyed this one though, Ali! :)
    Lovely review!

  8. I totally agree about MI. I liked it for the first three books, but book four totally put me off and I have had no desire to pick up the series beyond that. I really did like this series, and I think you will love books two and three.

    1. Even though I feel mean saying the things I did about MI, I am so glad that I was not the only one slightly let down by the idea of an extension on the series when it had already ended nicely.

  11. I agree with Kimba and the others. My daughter picked these up after I read book one then passed it on to her - she continued to enjoy the series, but hesitated with this series. Good to know that this is still a thrilling addition!!

  14. 3 stars??? But, but... Why? What didn't work out for you? I actually loved TID much more than TMI (I found them too melodramatic and over the top). And I completely agree with you about additional books in The Mortal Instruments, I still haven't read last two and, to be honest, I probably won't read them.
