Ignite is the first book in the Midnight Fire Series. It is approximately 65,000 words.

Excerpt:

Prologue

Kira watched as he languidly stood up, flexing his muscles as though he had just awakened from a long dream. He stretched his arms over his head and cracked the bones in his neck before finally settling his gaze on her. She hardly recognized him, the boy she had fallen in love with. Where minutes before there had been light and emotion in his eyes, there was only a black hole, a seemingly endless abyss. Kira had never seen him look at her that way, like less than food, like vermin, even since the first time they had met.

"Aren’t you going to run?" He asked with sinister humor coloring his words. The smirk on his face may as well have been a knife cutting through her heart. The darkness had always called him, but Kira had always thought that being with her would be enough to keep him from crossing over. She saw now that he had surrendered to his nature and for the first time she felt real fear when he looked at her.

Kira stepped backwards on shaky feet, trying to digest the question. She didn’t have an answer. How could she turn her back on him and run away? The man she loved was trying to kill her. There were no options. Could she forget it all—all the nights they had shared kissing and swapping secrets—and fight to kill? Or, would she run and admit that there was no hope that he would return to her?

Kira said his name and reached out her hand, searching one last time for the man she had lost.

"Yes, honey." The word hit her like a slap in the face as it rolled off of his tongue drenched in sarcasm.

Kira looked up at the sun, still hidden behind the shadow of the moon, and sprinted into the tree line behind her. She couldn’t give up on him now. But, when the eclipse was over, maybe she would finally find the strength to fight.

First Chapter Excerpt:
Finally, she looked at the guy Luke had called Tristan. He seemed different to her somehow, with jet-black hair that hung over his eyes a little, and barely visible dimples that played on his cheeks. His eyes were also an icy blue, but they seemed deeper to her, like steep ravines she could fall into. He stayed out of the conversation, she noticed, as if lost in his own thoughts—ones that seemed more troublesome than the cutting remarks being doled out by his friends. He had a rebel without a cause look that made him perilous for a girl’s heart.
Suddenly, he turned to Kira and his eyes seemed to brighten a shade when they landed on hers. He stared, and Kira, who was never one to back down, returned his look with interest.

"Who are you?" He asked in a barely audible voice filled with surprise, one just loud enough to attract the attention of his friends and Luke. Kira melted at the sound. He was dangerous she knew, but something about him made her feel safe and afraid at the same time.

"Kira," was all she could respond with. They both looked at each other, trying to unlock the other’s secrets.

His friends came to circle her now and she felt cornered. Fear sparked in her heart, like a quick flash of lightning. She didn’t quite understand it, but she also couldn’t shake it.

"Well, what have we here?" Diana leaned in to really look at her and Kira thought she could read shock on the girl’s face, despite the confidence in her voice. Tristan laid a hand on Diana’s arm, almost like a warning, Kira thought.

"Diana, back off," Luke said and tried to come to Kira’s rescue, but it was Mr. Bell who saved her by running into the classroom very late and very out of breath.

Guest Post:

I'm Kaitlyn Davis, the author of the Midnight Fire Series—a whirlwind paranormal adventure with heart-pumping action and heart-stopping romance—and this blog tour is celebrating the release of Scorch, the final book in the series! Thank you for joining me!

One of my favorite aspects of ending this series is that my main character, Kira, finally has to choose between the two leading men—Tristan and Luke! The suspense is killing some of my readers :) And for a while, it was killing me too! So, instead of talking about Scorch, I thought I would take everyone back to the beginning—back to Ignite, the first book in my series (free wherever ebooks are sold!).

This is the last of six guest posts that will turn the attention on both Tristan and Luke as they get to tell their side of the story! We'll be revisiting a few important scenes from the first chapters of Ignite, but this time it won’t be Kira who does the talking…

Last up? Kira and Tristan's impromptu acting scene…that Luke is forced to witness! When Kira and Tristan get caught not doing the assignment, their teacher forces them to read the infamous tomb scene from Romeo & Juliet in front of the whole class—and Luke has to sit there and watch without saying a word! For Luke, it's absolute torture. But even worse is the knowledge that he has all the answers Kira seeks, if only he wasn't under strict orders to keep his mouth shut…

As told by Luke…

Luke couldn’t watch.

He was going to kiss her. That jerk was going to kiss her. In front of the entire classroom.

It a punishment, Luke tried to reason. But it wasn't really. Not to Tristan. It was probably some twisted blessing in disguise.

Oh God, Luke looked to the side, it wasn't natural. The sun's flames burned inside of him, screamed to protect Kira from the vampire leaning over her, trapping her.

Luke took a deep breath—he needed to chill. They were just acting out a play, one scene for the class. He caught Diana's stare, meeting her cold blue eyes—they narrowed in disgust. So did his.

Now that was the way conduits and vampires were supposed to interact—with mutual loathing and disgust.

He sighed and turned back to the front, just in time to see Tristan slip from the desk, landing a little too gracefully on the floor.

Good he's dead, Luke thought wryly, if only it were real…

But then Kira sat up, wearing a pained expression as her eyes shifted around the room.

Luke grinned, anger forgotten.

The look on her face was priceless. The girl couldn’t act…at all—but it was cute to watch her try.

Their teacher, Mr. Bell, played the friar, telling Juliet of her love Romeo's demise. Kira, trying her absolute best, looked like the poor portrayal of a Victorian Lady who needed smelling salts.

Luke fought back a snicker…definitely a losing battle. There was no way he would keep it together—he was about to burst. The second Kira read her lines, he was going to crack up.

But then—ding!—the bell rang. Luke shook his head. She was so freaking lucky.

Reaching down for his backpack, he tried his best to ignore the confused expression on Kira's face as she looked down at Tristan. Her hand moved to her cheek, holding it there as Tristan stood, and the two of them locked gazes.

Feeling his blood boil again, Luke walked swiftly out of the classroom. He didn’t want to watch anymore.

But he waited for Kira outside the classroom, even as his mind urged him to go to class. His heart softened. He couldn’t just abandon her.

When Kira finally walked out, her steps dragged, as though invisible weights were strung to her ankles.

Luke sighed. She needed a friend. And that was exactly what he would be.

"So, that was interesting," he said, leaving the opening, giving her the chance to explain. She didn’t take it. Luke pushed into easy territory, shoving his need for answers to the side. There would be time for that later. "I personally thought you were captivating as Juliet. Great idea to put a hand to your chest, then forehead, and pretend to faint when you saw Romeo had died. Classic move."

Got her, Luke thought when Kira's lip twitched into a grin. Her hands pressed into Luke's arm, shoving him playfully to the side.

"I'm not an actress and I never said I was," she retorted, head held high.

"Trust me…I know," Luke said and jumped to his left, side-stepping the shove that he knew was coming. Stubborn and predictable, that was his Kira. But sweet and charming too. And infuriating, in a somewhat sexy way…

Okay enough, he thought, back to business.

"Want to talk about it?" He asked, wishing he could take the haunt away from her expression.

"What?" Kira asked, shaking the frown from her face and hugging her arms tightly across her torso. But he wasn't letting it go, not yet.

"Whatever it was you and Tristan got in trouble for fighting about," Luke pressed. He just wished she would tell him the truth—he was trying to protect her. To keep her safe from all the evils she didn’t realize existed.

"I was just thanking him for saving me in that surfboard accident. I never really got the chance before."

Luke sighed. She wasn't going to tell him about it. Not yet anyway.

"I bet he didn’t want to hear any of it," Luke told her, not quite able to hide the sadness in his voice. He didn’t want to pretend anymore, not with Kira. He wished he could just tell her the truth, could tell her what she was. But he couldn't, not without breaking orders. Kira had to find out for herself—those were the rules.

"Something like that." She shrugged.

Luke sighed.

If she didn’t want to talk to him, that was her prerogative. But he could do one thing, one thing Tristan couldn't. He could make her laugh. He could make her forget.

"Cheer up," Luke said, putting a brotherly arm over her shoulder, using all of his will power not to pull her in closer, to hug her tightly against his body. That wasn't what she needed, not now.

No, what she needed was some fun. And he knew just the thing.

"Want to skip class and buy some ice cream? I wouldn’t mind playing hooky for the rest of the day."

"And how are we supposed to do that?" Kira asked, raising her eyebrow.

No faith, Luke shook his head, thinking of the straw in his backpack. Spitballs. Totally underrated, but totally affective. And he knew a security guard who needed to be brought down a few pegs.

"Follow me you must, young padawan," Luke said, already grinning. Kira's features shifted, matching his, gaining excitement. Happiness leaked in, washing the hurt away.

He grabbed her hand and took off at a run.

There was one thing he could do for Kira that no one else could—he could make her laugh, really laugh, laugh so hard that she cried, and once so hard that she snorted.

Luke gripped her warm palm.

For now that was enough.

  3. Like Jenny, I've never heard of this series before. But I have so much love for effective prologues, I know they're considered to be somewhat undesireable for authors and critics alike, but there's nothing like a well-writtel prologue to pull me right in.
Very interesting, though I could do without the love triangle.
