My Rating: 4.5 Stars!

Book Description:
Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the Tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill—the greatest test an enchanter will ever know. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the Tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love... or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear... the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

I'm going to be completely upfront with this review and start by saying this book has a lot of elements, from some of my most beloved YA series but at the same time, it is unique and holds its own.

Set in an almost historic Russia with magic at the surface and a deadly game at the heart, this was a non-stop, heart pounding fun fantasy that was hard to put down.

Fast paced, detail oriented, and with just a hint or romance, this truly was everything I was hoping it would be.

With an ending that left me breathless and wanting more, this is one series that is sure to tease, please, and leave those reading on edge for more.

  1. I'm honestly not sure about this one yet. I'm scared to even try it out because none of the hyped titles this year have worked for me. And this one was so hyped even before people had read the book, I'm wary. I'm glad that it worked for you though, Ali, even though it wasn't the most unique YA book.
    Lovely review! :)

    1. I know. :( I think it is because it isn't quite as action packed as a lot of people thought and the romance is pretty non-existent but if you look past that it is pretty good.

  3. I’m so weary about Russian inspired books, Ali. Sometimes authors don’t do their research and made a poor representation of my culture. I hope this is not the case here, but I’ve been burned so many times that I’m too afraid to pick up this book.

  10. I'm so glad this book was everything you wanted it to be! It sounds like it was a super worth while read with all of the heart pounding action! I just wish there was more of a romance element, but I need to just stop being a PICKY. ;)

  11. I love this cover. I also love the idea of historic Russia with magic. I see that some people are calling this a "buzz book" as I live under a YA rock, I haven't heard of it. I might try it at some point. I am very picky about YA. Great review.

    1. Yeah you do sort of need to like the genre but it would be a good first foray into it at any rate if you do decide to give it a try.
